Within days of adopting your new pet, you should take her/him to our hospital for an exam. The initial visit will take about 30-40min as our doctors and health care team will answer your questions and discuss the preventive care needed to keep your pet healthy: vaccinations, fecal test, deworming, flea/tick and heartworm prevention, ear cleaning, appropriate nutrition, spay/neutering, dental care and other. During that first visit, you will also receive a pet passport where you will be able to keep track of all the health records of your pet. At the end of your first visit, you will also receive a complimentary 30-day pet insurance through Trupanion.
Adult dogs/cats, pets over 6 months of age:
Every 6 months, you should bring your pet in for a wellness exam (check-up.) This will include a full physical exam along with a report of the doctor's findings, and recommendations for continued care. Vaccinations are recommended based on your pet's lifestyle. Bring in any medical history you have of your pet when you come to our hospital. It's best to keep a journal of your pet's health throughout his or her life, including behavioral shifts. Redwood Animal Hospital recommends that all pets be dewormed and have their feces checked for parasites every 6 months. We also recommend annual heartworm testing and annual Felv/Fiv testing for outdoor catsl
Senior dogs/cats and patients with chronic illness (hypo or hyper-thyroid, diabetes, renal failure, arthritis...):
Not all breeds and species age the same way but often time a pet is considered senior at about 7 years of age. This is when we usually recommend to do a complete blood test to check the function of the kidneys, liver, check for diabetes, thyroid level, get a complete cell count and even an urine test. During this bi-annual exam we also recommend to check blood pressure, and might recommend an ECG (Electro CardioGram), Xrays, or even an Ultrasound if for example your pet has a heart murmur. Along with the routine preventive care, every 6-12 months our veterinarian might recommend some of those more advanced diagnostics.
